Happy Tuesday, Friends!

Today I’ve got an ultra delicious recipe to share with you, but first: the background story.

Body Energy Club is a local supplement chain here in Vancouver. It’s where I buy all my sports nutrition supplements, but I also love them because of their smoothies.

Particularly the Almond Butter Chocolate Monkey Smoothie.

This smoothie has been a staple in my life for a couple of years now. It’s the perfect blend of chocolate, banana, and almond butter – all of my favourite things! If I could I would get one every. single. day, but I try to limit myself to one every couple of weeks.

My love for the Chocolate Monkey is well-known. On my birthday I picked one up on my way to work, and when my supervisor came in for his evening shift he brought me one as well! Two Chocolate Monkeys in one day is a win in my books 😉

Now, the reason I’m telling you all this is because last Tuesday I really wanted a Chocolate Monkey. Like REALLY wanted one. But I knew Friday was going to be an ultra-busy day and I was heading out for a long bike ride, so I figured it would make more sense for me to skip lunch on Friday and pick one of these puppies up on my way to work instead.

So I patiently waited all week for my Chocolate Monkey. Friday rolled around, I was starving from my morning ride, and I was set and ready to leave for work 10 minutes early so I’d have time for my smoothie.

And then the perfect idea hit me. I recently acquired a chin-up bar for my apartment, and since I am SO CLOSE to hitting a full chin-up on that thing, I realized I would probably be able to do one of my long-time goals: a burpee chin-up.

With just a few minutes to spare before leaving for work, I dropped everything to attempt the elusive burpee chin-up. Annnd ended up with a mild concussion and what is now two black eyes.

The takeaway here? Door-mounted chin-up bars are not meant to be jumped onto.

Needless to say, I didn’t get my Chocolate Monkey. I was late for work and sent to a walk-in clinic, before being sent home for an incredibly lazy and un-fun weekend.

Boo.

Yesterday I decided enough was enough and took matters into my own hands. I didn’t have time to walk to Body Energy Club, but I DID have some chocolate almond milk in my fridge. I figured that if I couldn’t have the real thing yet, I could at least have a knock-off.

Hence, the Wanna-Be Chocolate Monkey Smoothie.

If you live in Vancouver I highly recommend you check out Body Energy Club for the real deal, but if you don’t, or if you just want to have a Chocolate Monkey every single day and not go poor from buying too many smoothies, this is totally a suitable alternative.

You Will Need:

  • 1 cup chocolate almond milk
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 tbsp natural almond butter
  • 1 tbsp cacao nibs
  • 2 chopped dates
  • Dash cinnamon
  • 1 scoop protein powder (optional, but recommended. I use Sun Warrior)

Directions:

1. Add all ingredients to a blender, blend, and enjoy!

Easy peasy, right?! I’ll still be hittin’ up BEC for the real deal, but this at-home version is definitely going to make an appearance more often!

What’s your favourite smoothie? Have you ever re-created one of your favourite smoothie bar drinks at home??

Yummy! 😀 I accidentally recreated my favorite Jamba Juice flavor last summer! <3 It was a very happy and unexpected accident though, so I'm not entirely sure I can get the flavors just right again!

This looks super good! :] I haven't added dates to my smoothies in a billion moons–I need to make this when I get back home!

OO that’s awesome! I love delicious accidents 😉 I’ve never had Jamba Juice before! I’ll have to try it next time I’m south of the border 🙂
