In my line of work, I get to celebrate a lot of accomplishments. 🎉

Crossing the finish line of a first half marathon, nailing the deadlift, feeling more confident while shopping, and even sticking to a commitment to move for 30 minutes a day. These are all achievements I’ve been able to celebrate with my clients. I occasionally get messages and emails from women who I haven’t even met in person telling me about a workout they rocked, or how they said no to the office donuts.

How cool is that?!

But with celebrating accomplishments comes the inevitable task of having to acknowledge missteps. Setbacks. Failures, even.

I’ll say right off the bat that the word “failure” is not my fav. I truly believe that we only fail when we stop trying. Missing the target, whether it’s by an inch or a mile, is simply feedback that we need a new course of action. Or at the very least, a tweak to our current course.

But every so often (and it happens more often than most people would like you to think) when I ask “so how did it go with {insert healthy habit} since we last spoke?” I get a variation of “I failed“.

I blew it.

I f*$ked up.

I didn’t do it…I just keep getting in my own way!

I’m so far off the wagon I can’t even see it anymore.

I forgot I said I was going to do that as soon as I left the gym/hung up the phone/got off Skype.

So what are the reasons why your healthy habits fail?

It’s not because you’re a bad person (because you’re not). It’s not because you’re not motivated (because you are – I can guarantee that). It’s not because you’re not meant to be happy, healthy, and confident (because believe me sister, you are).

While you are all fabulously unique individuals, who all have your own experiences, life circumstances, goals, dreams, and emotions, I’ve identified a few key reasons why your healthy habits fail.

It’s these reasons, or a slight variation of them, that cause the women I coach to miss the mark on the things they say they want to do. It’s because of these three main circumstances why I see countless women on social media and in my local community get down on themselves because they “keep getting in their way”. And whenever I totally botch whatever new habit I said I was going to take on, it’s because of one of these issues.

1. You don’t have a clear understanding of what you’re doing (or why you’re doing it).

Have you ever made the commitment to begin eating clean without really understanding what the hell “eating clean” even means? Or have you ever told yourself you’re going to workout more, without defining what constitutes as “more”? Is it one more time a week? One more time a month? Seven more times a week?

When you don’t really know what you’re doing, it’s a lot harder to follow through. Order a salad and wonder if the restaurant’s house dressing is considered clean (spoiler alert – it’s probably not). Get confused as hell by the vegan websites that tell you meat is unclean, and the paleo websites that tell you grains are unclean. Promise yourself you’ll hit the gym twice this week, but the days are dependant on what your schedule looks like.

Looking at these circumstances, I feel like giving up and I haven’t even started!

Or what about when you don’t know why you’re doing these things? Why is clean eating good for you? What’s that nightly turmeric latte you promised yourself going to do for you? What’s all the fuss about sleep? If you don’t understand what a certain action is going to do for you, it’ll be a lot harder to stick with it.

2. The “why” behind your actions isn’t compelling enough.

So maybe you’ve defined “clean eating”. You know what “more exercise” looks like to you, and you have a clear understanding of how these things will impact your health.

But WHY are they important to you? What do the results these actions will give you MEAN to you?

Does it mean more energy to run around with your kids? Feeling more confident so you can stand up for yourself at the office? Looking hot in a bikini?

We’re all motivated by different things; a powerful driver for one woman may not be enough to push another to even bat an eyelash. So it’s important to pick actions and habits that will lead to results that are aligned with what matters to you.

reasons why your healthy habits failMaybe super hot fitness model on the cover of the latest magazine says you should eat clean so you can rock your bikini this summer. At first thought, you’re wowed by the idea so you raise your hand and commit to the clean eating lifestyle.

But a week, a day, maybe even an hour later, you found your hands in a bag of potato chips because A) you don’t live near open water and your climate is never warm enough for you to put on a bikini, and B) you don’t really care about what you look like in a bikini.

Get where I’m goin’ here?

3. You’re taking on too much at once.

The sting from the New Year’s Resolution wound is still alive and well for many. Those weekly pilates classes, daily green smoothies, 45 minutes of nightly meditation, and 30 minutes of gratitude journalling seemed like such a great idea on December 31.

So what gives?

You’re a busy woman. You’ve got a lot on your plate, and I’m willing to bet your mental and emotional capacity for taking on 15 new challenges all at once is pretty much non-existent. At least mine is.

Going from zero to one thousand is overwhelming. And being overwhelmed usually leads to inaction. Inaction leads to no results, no results leads to thoughts of “I’m a failure“. Even if you’ve already been at this whole “health game” for awhile, by trying to implement tons of new habits all at once you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.

So what should you do?

The solutions to the above problems are actually pretty simple:

Get a clear understanding of what you’re actually committing to, and why you’re committing to it.

Ask yourself why the results that commitment will lead to are so important to you. What will they do for you? How will they impact your life? What will they allow you to do that you can’t do now?

Break it down, and take it one step at a time.

Easy peasy, right?

Sort of 😉 There will always be days that test your willpower. There will be moments you legitimately forgot you promised yourself no more office donuts. There will be times you’ll jump off the wagon, roll to the side of the road, and wave as the wagon drives away from you.

What matters is that you revisit why those commitments are (or at least, were) important to you, then pick yourself back up and try again.

It’s simple, but it’s not necessarily easy. Especially if you’re going at it alone. Which is why I’m so excited for the free Healthy Habits Challenge to begin on February 22!
